This football team represents the University of Texas at the games of the NCAA FBS. The team belongs to the Big 12 Conference currently but over the course of its career has been a member of various other conferences as well as having been an independent team. The total number of conference wins it has garnered is 32. A good 129 of their members have been named All-American players. Twice the Heisman Trophy was received by a player. Nineteen of their men have been admitted into Halls of Fame. The College Football Hall of Fame enshrined 15 while the NFL Hall of Fame accepted 4.
Up to 2009, the over-all record of the team rates them third for the category of most wins. The record stands at 845-318-33, representing a winning rate of .720. Its other accomplishments include being second for most frequent appearances in Bowl games, eighth for the largest number of games, being included in the top rankings 8.5 times for every 10 polls, being included in the top ten list by 2 different polls more than a third of the time and being included nearly half of the time in the best 25 teams.
The first University of Texas football team was launched in 1893, playing versus the Dallas Football club. That club was then adjudged the greatest in the state. The Texans determined to disprove that claim and did so with an upset victory of 18-16.
Under coach R. D. Wentworth, the team started out with force. Their first six opponents where shut out and the over-all score for those six games was 191-0. Subsequently Missouri also dealt Texas a blow with 38-0. However, Wentworth was determined to get a replay of his shutouts and in 1894, the team gave Texas A&M a sweeping 38-0. Later in that same year Oklahoma was to go down with a 28-2 score. The team scored 207-57-2-12 over this period.
Under the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association it bagged two victories in 1913 and 1914. The next year, the team joined the Southwest Conference and in 1920 grabbed the title for that conference.
The team has won, all in all, 32 conference championships, the last three being in 1996, 2005 and 2009 when they had joined the Big 12 Conference. Its four national championships were taken in 1963, 1969, 1979 and 2005. In all but the 1970 win they grabbed the succeeding Bowl event.
The team has also played in four Bowl Championship Series Games, winning in 2005, 2006 and 2009. They lost in the 2010 game.
A glance at a record of their coaches from 1941 to 2009 shows all of them having more wins than losses. If that is an indicator of the persistence of the team or the talent of the coach or both is anybody’s guess.
The team or some of its members have been honored by various awards. These include the Heisman Trophy for Most Outstanding Player, the Chic Harley Award for College Football Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award for Best Football Player, the AP Player of the Year for Most Outstanding Player and the Walter Camp Award for Player of the Year.
