No one knew that in 1953 in Baltimore, a winning team was going to be born in the Colts. They didn’t start out in Indianapolis; instead, they played in Maryland for years, finally leaving for Indianapolis in 1984. There, they played at the Hoosier Dome, and have been named “horseshoes” because of the unique logo pressed on their jerseys. Their colors are blue and white, and the horseshoe logo is displayed on their jerseys.
When they first began, the Colts weren’t a winning team. They started out playing in Indianapolis as a struggling pro team and lost one year after another. A depression sank into the players’ morale and they finally picked a new head coach – Ron Meyer. Finally the Colts were able to see success. Right after Meyer was selected for the team, the Colts went on to win three games (the last three of the season).
When Meyer was coach, the Colts started win many more games than they had before. Sometimes they did lose, but ultimately they took home the greatest winning record of the NFL. In 1996, Bill Polian took over for Ron Meyer and started a new takeover of the team. He got rid of older players and selected new blood for the Colts. He also chose Peyton Manning, the quarterback who single handily marked a new era for the Indianapolis Colts.
All the Mannings have a history of being excellent football players, and Peyton Manning was no exception. He helped the team rise to victory from 1996 on. Now they continue to hold the title because of Peyton Manning’s leadership ability and excellent football skill.
In 2007, the Colts took their place in NFL history. The Super Bowl was played at Dolphin Stadium in the rain. The Chicago Bears faced the Colts, and they lost. At this point, the Colts not only won the Super Bowl but also became the first team to win in the rain and to win in an outdoor stadium.
The Colts have had many Hall of Fame players including Johnny Unitas and Art Donovan. Truly, the Colts’ success can be attributed to their talent and exceptional coaches who’ve helped them get to victory. They’ve had one win after another because they’ve persisted through the years and always overcome the odds.
Interestingly, the Colts haven’t suffered the same drama and interpersonal conflicts that commonly arise with NFL teams. Their problems – at least the few they’ve had – have come more just from individual players having trouble with various aspects of the game. This team doesn’t have a sordid history that many other teams have had.
The Colts continue to carry their fame and title with pride and hold their training camps in Anderson, Indiana. They have continued to be a team that focuses on the heart of the game: good football playing. They’ve never gotten bogged down in mistakes or rookie players, and for this reason they’ve managed to get to the height of success they’re at today.
