For some time now I have been making adjustments to our company’s search engine. My goal was to guarantee placement in one of the top positions of a list of Google search results. I believed that this could be done by carefully balancing a combination of keywords, meta tags and actual site content, which I had always thought to be the most important factor.

At the present time, it appears as though quality content is not sufficient to assure a good Google hit ranking. I have read many articles on SEO and the current consensus among experts is that link building is the most effective strategy. The number of backlinks from other sites is now considered to be an extremely important parameter. So I decided to focus on backlinks as a way to optimize our ranking in Google search results.

There are several strategies for getting backlinks to your site. A very popular method is the use of an online catalogue known as a web directory. Web directories collect links to outside sides and list them in sorted categories according to site content. Some web directories are free, some charge a listing fee, and some require you to backlink to their own site in return. You can either use a directory submission tool to contact web directories, or hire a third party submission service to do this for you.

Directory submission tools have a built-in database of web directories. I used a free submission tool and didn’t have to search for directories myself. Using this free tool, I submitted my site to about 2000 web directories in just a few days. I also used different anchor texts and descriptions for my site, so each submission looked unique. The directory submission tool made this all very easy. After submission, my site went to the directories’ validation queue. This process takes days or even weeks, so don’t expect instant improvements in your Google search ranking.

Another good way to generate backlinks is by posting a comment on WordPress Blogs. To post a comment you must provide your name, URL and e-mail address. If you use your keywords as your name and your site address as your URL, then when your comment is posted it becomes a backlink to your website. Please note that I only posted comments in blogs that were relevant to our company’s business, and only when I had a relevant comment to make. Posting on an irrelevant blog or leaving an irrelevant comment could be considered spamming, and I don’t condone that. You should only post if you have a comment to make, not just to get a backlink. Comments that have already been posted by others will give you an idea of what sort of comment you should leave.
