The past two generations have seen a significant difference in the way people look at big women. With a majority of Americans classified as overweight, designers and manufacturers have been forced to come to terms with new sizing and fashionable designs for large size women. The addition of plus size lingerie in most clothing lines is found in most clothing stores, rather than just in specialty shops.
Full figured women now are accepted as models, both in print and on the runway. The woman today makes no secret of the fact that she enjoys food and refuses to starve for the sake of fashion. Designers have been forced to create lingerie that looks good and fits size 18 women as well as size 4 women.
The major change in women’s lingerie is a move toward comfort and beauty in lingerie rather than expending most of the effort to confining women’s bodies by means of lacing, boning and otherwise confining the body. Different fabrics provide support where needed without the need for heavy undergarments. Women of larger stature couldn’t move easily or participate in any strenuous activities because clothing did not permit natural movement.
Designers for women’s lingerie have realized that women of all sizes enjoy beautiful undergarments that can be worn in comfort. Being overweight does not mean dislike of pretty garments. The enjoyment of delicate lingerie in lace and silk is enjoyable for double-X size women as well as for pencil-thin model types.
In the past, there were not many options for plus-size women. Colors tended to be basic white or black and fabrics were often heavy. Today, there are many choices in fabrics that support while looking good. The color choices can include fashion prints and delicate pastels.
Plus size lingerie designers are well aware that there must be innovative ways of providing support without binding or constricting. Lingerie is available in feminine colors as well as bold fashion hues. When it comes to lingerie, the woman who wears double-X sizes now has many great choices.
